BAD IDEA: Hotel from The Shining Will Build on a Pet Cemetery

The Stanley Hotel is the resort that inspired Stephen King’s horror masterpiece The Shining. And now the creepy Colorado hotel is looking to expand right over a nearby pet cemetery. MISTAKE.

According to Coloradoan, the pet graves will be desecrated to make room for more office space as well as wedding event space. Perfect. Yes, lets get married atop the corpses of a million dead cats. What could possibly go wrong?

The Sky Doesn’t Lie:

These aerial shots of factory farming look like bloody zombie wounds

By

America’s heartland! Place of milk and honey! Where cows frolic happily in fields full of corn, butterflies, and maple syrup (just go with it). Or not? You’re telling me the flatlands are actually covered in festering scabs, thanks to factory farming? OK, maybe YOU aren’t telling me that, but British photographer Mishka Henner is:

A waste lagoon at Coronado Feeders, Dalhart, Texas. Yuck.

Henner didn’t set out to make an artsy statement about the environmental destruction of feedlots. He was initially looking for aerial shots of oil fields when he found the gruesome photography.Fast Company explains:

Massive waste lagoons, which waft up dangerous hydrogen sulfide fumes and can contaminate groundwater with nitrates and antibiotics, first resemble open, infected wounds …

“I came across these really strange-looking structures, like a big lagoon, or all these dots that look like microbes,” Henner says. “We have factory farming in England, but we don’t have it on that scale. I was just absolutely blown away.”

Tacosa Feedyard’s waste lagoon in Texas or nuclear waste site?

Thankfully, Henner is safe from increasingly popular ag-gag laws preventing feedlot photography, since the photos are open-source imagery from satellites. (He previously showcased open-source aerial shots of military outposts for a 2010 book.)

Need to Know: Derek Nicoletto

4.18.2013

BY DIEGO JAMES

The electropop singer inspires a variety of artists with the release of ‘Just Panic and Get It Over With’

Derek Nicoletto wants his album release for Just Panic and Get It Over With to inspire a “worldwide visual art movement.” So far, three dozen artists have created works based on the EP’s songs that will be exhibited in Honolulu, Manchester, Provincetown, and elsewhere, with the first exhibit to take place this summer at Spring Gallery in SoHo. This weekend there’s an album release party April 19 at New York City’sArlene’s Grocery.

The video for one of the tracks from the EP shows that artistic input reflected in the Just Panic…project, with Nicoletto himself, wearing a black monkl-like hood, painting a self-portrait and images of paint diffusing in water.

EXCLUSIVE: Watch the video for “San Simeon” directed by Josh Stoddard

As Nicoletto explains:

“The video for San Simeon conceptually reflects the infusion of visual art into the music of the overall Just Panic And Get Over With project. The music of the six-song EP is inspiring art events that will accompany our live tour; this video pays homage to those events, which begin this summer. The video was filmed by Josh Stoddard of Gibson Guitars, on location at The Hit Factory at Gibson Entertainment. It was important to me that I be shown with my band, because I am not a one-man show. The video’s fluidity and colorfulness resemble the atmosphere of the song – a hopeful intimacy with which I wrote my lyrics and melody, and how I delivered the vocals.”
